Reading Apprenticeship: Framework and Tools for Professors and Students

Reading Apprenticeship (RA) is an approach to teaching and learning which notices the importance of including and attending to the “whole” student.  It builds upon 4 dimensions and at the heart of these dimensions is the metacognitive conversation that occurs both internally and externally.  This conversation happens when students and professors are thinking about their thoughts when engaged in a text.
In addition, this conversation can occur when readers discuss what they are noticing with one another.  When professors “make their thinking visible” to students through modeling specific RA routines, they have the opportunity to apprentice students into what it is they are reading. This, in turn, has the power to help transform the way students connect with their coursework and help them become confident and motivated learners in any discipline.

In that section you will find a variety of tools that you can integrate into your classroom to unlock your students meaning-making potential.  In addition, you will also find some reading for you to explore as you think about how Reading Apprenticeship fits into the work you do.
