APA Formatting Guidelines

The following are general guidelines for formatting papers in APA 7th style. If your professor provides alternate instructions, follow those instead.

  • Title Page: Include your paper title in bold, followed by your name, department and college name, course number and name, your instructor's name, and the date. Title page content should be centered and double-spaced, approximately halfway down the page.
  • Paper Title: Repeat the paper title on the 2nd page. Title should be bold and centered, with no underlining or other special formatting.
  • Margins: 1" all around (except for the page number)
  • Font: Select an easily readable font such as Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial, etc. Calibri in size 11pt or Times New Roman in size 12pt are safe bets.
  • Line-spacing: Double-space throughout the paper, including the title page, any block quotes, and your References page.
  • Page Numbers: All pages should be numbered in the top right hand corner, ½ inch from top.
  • References List: Start a new page for your References. Citations should be double-spaced with ½ inch hanging indent. Alphabetize citations by the author's last name. If no author is provided, use the title of the source instead.
