Borrowing

Who May Borrow Library Materials

Any current LACCD student or employee can borrow materials from the Pierce Library. Students must be currently enrolled in a class at Pierce to borrow reserve materials. Community members are welcome to use the library, but may not borrow materials to take home.

The library communicates with users through their student and staff email accounts. Make sure to check your email for reminders and overdue notices.

ID Policy

You will need to bring an official photo I.D. and know your student I.D. number to check out materials. The physical items listed below, or digital photos of the same, qualify as official photo I.D.'s:

  • Student ID card with photo issued by any LACCD College. (Student ID cards can be acquired at Copy Tech.)
  • Student ID card with photo from other higher education institutions.
  • Government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, California ID, passport).
  • High school ID card with photo.

Types of Materials that can be borrowed

  • Circulating Books: (books from the Stacks, Paperbacks, Children's Collection, etc.) These books can be checked out for 28 days. Limit of 10 books checked out at a time, 5 per subject.
  • Reserve Textbooks The library carries some of the current textbooks assigned for classes. Most of these reserve books have a two hour time limit. You can search for your textbook through the book catalog. Requests cannot be placed on Reserve Items.
  • Periodicals Students may check out a total of ten periodicals at a time with a maximum of five of the same title. Periodicals are loaned out for one week at a time and renewed up to two times. Periodicals may be renewed only at the periodicals desk - not over the telephone or online.
  • Laptops and other equipment The library has some Microsoft Surfaces and Chromebooks available for checkout from the Computer Lab help desk. The Library also checks out other equipment like headphones and chargers.

Renewals

Regular circulating books (28 day loans) are automatically renewed for the entire term UNLESS another user has placed a request on the item OR the borrower has a block on their record. Reserves, media and equipment are not eligible for renewal.

Returns

When the library is open, please return items to the circulation desk. There is a book drop outside the main library entrance for returning items when the library is closed.

Fines

Fines are not charged for regular books that are overdue. Overdue two hour reserve textbooks are fined at the rate of one dollar per hour. See the chart below for other item types. Please contact the circulation desk at (818)719-6409 or library@piercecollege.edu regarding payment options.

Requests (Holds)

Requests are available only for regular circulating items - no reserve materials. If an item is eligible for request, there will be a request option available next the title.  Fill out the required fields. You will receive an email once the items are ready to be picked up. Items not picked up within 7 days will be returned to the owning library.

LACCD students can also go directly to one of the other libraries to borrow items. This does not apply to reserve items, which are usually only available for students from that college.

Interlibrary  Loans

Pierce College does not participate in any interlibrary loan agreements.
